Chess is an extra mural activity which develops mental abilities such as concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving and planning. The challenges are endless and every game is different so it encourages the children to be self-motivated. Many parallels have been drawn between mathematics, music and chess. Good sportsmanship and team work are additional benefits of joining the chess club.

The chess team play weekly matches and the players constantly challenge each other in order to move up the chess ladder. The chess club consists of 6 groups, from grade 1 to 7. We start at the beginning of the second term of the school year. We meet once a week on a Wednesday, at 13:45 – 14:45.

Any learner from the school may join the club. The purpose of the chess club is to teach the students how to play the game. They are both informal and timed games. Although not required, players on level 3 are invited to attend local chess tournaments.

At the end of the chess season the children will be awarded at a prize giving event.

  • Level 1 – Red certificate
  • Level 2 – Silver Certificate
  • Level 3 – Golden Certificate and Merit badge
  • Best player of the year will be awarded with a trophy.
